Summer 2020
When Menu Extra was founded in 2020, our mission was clear: to share our gastronomy.
The means, however, were a little less so! We had several ideas in mind, such as setting up a small restaurant in a commercial building, selling fermented products such as miso, tamari and even sake, opening a natural wine bar, a restaurant in the countryside, etc. With our heads full of projects and ambition, we nevertheless took a step back to tackle our first challenge: the pandemic.
Following the success of our two chefs, Francis on Top Chef Canada and Camilo on Les chefs! , the media eye was riveted on Menu Extra. Our situation was quite paradoxical, we saw our friends in the industry struggling to survive while journalists asked us when we were going to open our restaurant.
Recognizing our privileged position, we decided to start a series of charity pop-ups by responding to two urgent needs. The first was to inhabit and host the kitchens of several restaurants to allow them to pay their fixed costs. The second was to give to organizations that are close to our hearts and that were in the shadows of the pandemic context.
Event at Boxerman's, July 4, 2020
The concept of these events was simple: occupy a restaurant for a day and create a gourmet menu inspired by a classic of Quebec culture! The revenues were divided between the restaurants and the organizations.
It was also during these moments that the team came together, working in camaraderie towards a specific goal! These events allowed us to connect with our community, let our creativity run wild and make a concrete change in our society.
The brigade for the event in Manitoba, 2020
So we went to cook in the restaurants La Prunelle, l'Île flottante, the late Manitoba, le Candide, le Nora Gray, Le Moccione, Le Pumpui, le Boxerman's and we donated the profits to the foundations Banques Alimentaires du Québec, 3 points, Native Women's shelter of Montreal, Gris-Montréal, Suicide Action Montréal, Desta Black Youth Network, Foyer du Monde, South Asian Women's Centre, Fondation du Centre jeunesse de Montréal.
After raising over $40,000 in these pop-ups, we want to continue to grow this number every year! That's why we decided to do it again, this time at our location at 5206 Saint-Laurent.
To mark the occasion, Laurent Dagenais will join the brigade, sharing his talents and good humor, on a beautiful sunny Sunday. On the menu: Lobster roll, old bay chips, marinade and lemon cake. All profits will go to La Tablée des Chefs.
